Plan A Family Adventure With 5 Kid-Friendly Hikes In San Diego

Getting out into nature with your family is always a good idea. The only issue is that not every trail is created equal. While some will give you the best afternoon with your crew, others are bound to send your children spiraling as they decide they simply cannot move another step without their legs collapsing. If you need some help planning your next trip, I have you covered! As a San Diego family photographer, I adore working with parents to make unforgettable memories. Here are the kid-friendly hikes in San Diego I always recommend!

Get Some Fresh Air This Weekend With These Wonderful Kid-Friendly Hikes In San Diego

Chollas Lake Park

6350 College Grove Drive, San Diego, California 92115

Chollas Lake Park is a scenic kid-friendly hike that takes you through 2.3 miles of San Diego sun! With less than 200 total feet of elevation, it is the perfect challenge for little legs. There is also parking nearby, though the lots can get pretty full during peak hours. My suggestion is to head out early in the morning so you can beat the afternoon rush!

Cowles Mountain from Barker Way

Barker, San Diego, California 92119

If you are looking for a great option for elementary-aged kids, I think you are really going to love Cowles Mountain from Barker Way! This kid-friendly hike is going to be a little harder for young San Diego kids, but because it is an out-and-back, you can turn around at any point. The total trail lasts for 3.2 miles and takes you up over 850 feet, offering picture-perfect views of the city below.

Point Loma Tidepools and Coastal Trail

Lands End Road, San Diego, California 92106

If you want a leisurely hike with breathtaking views, you might want to try the Point Loma Tidepools and Coastal Trail. This is a very simple out-and-back that lasts for one mile and only has around 100 feet in elevation. You will get some of the best views of the water while taking in the sunshine!

Oak Canyon to Grasslands Trail

Father Junipero Sierra Trail, San Diego, California 92119

If you are looking for a longer kid-friendly San Diego hike without too much elevation, I think you might love Oak Canyon to Grasslands Trail. This one is 3.8 miles with around 400 feet of elevation. It is my favorite best-kept secret in all of San Diego! It never gets too terribly crowded, giving you fabulous views without the visitors you might find on other trips.

Torrey Pines Beach Trail Loop

Torrey Preserve, California 92037

The Torrey Pines Beach Trail Loop takes you on a short trip around the Del Mar area. At just 2.3 miles with 357 feet of elevation, even preschoolers should be able to handle it! It does tend to get a little more crowded, especially on weekends, so expect some crowds! This trail is also not dog-friendly, so sadly, you will have to leave your snuggly best friend at home.
